🚨Something for you at the end of the note 🚨…..

I'm about to show you something that'll make you feel LUCID for the first time in years. Stay with me. Most people haven’t been truly bored in years… and it’s quietly costing them more than they think.

Ok, now close your eyes for a second. (After you read this part. 😁)

Picture a kid in 1974 or 1989. School's out. Back door screen slams behind her. She's got exactly zero plans, zero devices, and ☝️ rule: be home when the streetlights come on.

What does she do?

She uses her brain and does…..something. She finds a basketball ⛹️‍♀️and shoots hoops, which unknowingly works her hand eye coordination. She picks up her guitar 🎸and plays like she’s entertaining a filled Madison Square Garden even though it sounds like racket, which she unknowingly creates firing neurons in the frontal lobe and also improves the dexteritiy in her fingers. She then builds a weird fort 🛖in the middle of the living room out of two lawn chairs and a huge bedsheet and calls it a headquarters, which she unknowingly strengthens her construction skills. She lies in the grass and watches a cloud ⛅that looks like Abraham Lincoln riding a dinosaur and thinks about it for a solid 9 minutes ⌛. She gets bored, like, genuinely, magnificently, gloriously bored, and then her brain, having nothing else to do, cranks up like an old lawn mower and starts creating. For a few minutes… she’s completely lucid. Fully there. Not distracted. Not divided. Just… alive inside her own mind.

That kid's brain 🧠 was being developed the way God designed it… without interference.

Now picture a kid today. Same age. Same summer afternoon. Same back door.

But the phone goes with her.

And Harvard researchers will tell you plainly what happens next: "Boredom is the space in which creativity and imagination happen" and we've systematically paved over every square inch of that space with a glowing rectangle. 👉Harvard Medical School

Here's the thing, my rad friend. I'm not here to condemn anybody. Because, that’s me! A not good me. Lord knows I've been horizontal on my couch at 11pm doom-scrolling videos of people I don't know making food I'll never cook. 🫤 We are ALL in this. But we need to call it what it is.

And just like any idol, it fills your hands so completely that you stop reaching for what's real. "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Exodus 20:3

That verse wasn't just carved on stone tablets for ancient folks bowing to golden calves and statues. It's for anyone who reaches for the phone 📞 before they reach for the God 🙏 in the morning. (And I'm preaching to myself first.)

The device isn't evil. It's a tool 🔧. But a tool left running all day, every day, does something insidious: it colonizes your capacity for stillness. And stillness, that sacred, slightly uncomfortable, wonderfully boring quiet, is precisely where God tends to show up.

"Be still, and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10
